Project Barcelona Summer 2017

Class of arts

Course Title: Summer Course 2017: The Gaudi Experience and Beyond

Duration: 10-day course,  Dates: July 8 to July 17, 2017

Language: All course instruction is in English.

Credits: AIA CEU 18 hours. Certificates issued by Gaudi Institute Barcelona. Ask us about obtaining school or professional development credits.

Learners: Should be creative, open minded individuals with a passion for architecture, design, art, Gaudi, or creative pursuits. They should desire to enhance their artistic skills, gain education, develop professional credentials, or seek immersion in a foreign country.

Methods:

  • Hands-on, personal learning workshops with one-on-one instruction
  • In-depth history and engaged storytelling
  • Plein aire painting and sketching
  • Field trips with over-the-shoulder teaching and demonstrations

Growth:

  • Gain ability to create sketch drawings and water color images with pen, charcoal, and aquarelle to convey the visual world, your imagination, and conceptual thoughts.
  • Understand the work of Antoni Gaudi and other Spanish artists within the context of the Modernista movement and their relevance today.
  • Develop ‘an eye’ for beauty and composition.

Teaching

Daily Activities:

The structured course time includes studio, field sojourns, and mini lectures.  After class you have creativity assignments and free time to explore.

Day 1 – Barcelona city orientation; group dinner gathering

Day 2 – Theme: Textures, found objects. Learn basics of sketching and visualization; group dinner gathering

Day 3  - Theme: Visual Thinking with Gaudí - The design and architecture of the future

Atelier at Universidad de Barcelona Architecture. Dive deep into the hidden theory and thoughts of Gaudi. Techniques of line work, shading freehand. Outdoor sketching and perspective lines at Sagrada Familia and surrounding parks.

Day 4 – Theme: Immersion in Barcelona with Gaudí light - The colors of light. On location at the Museo Diocesano. Roof top skyline drawing course – silhouettes of form, space with sketching. Then water color courtyards and colonnades.

Day 5 -  Theme: Gaudi the Artist of the Senses. On location at the Palau Güell and Ramblas Experience. Inspiration from Mediterranean cuisine. Explore interior salons and outdoor terraces at Palau Güell while sketching with light, shadow and outdoor water color.

Day 6 – Theme: Walking in footsteps of Gaudí - the "Catalan vaults" – form, space and inspiration. Sketching, light, shadow and outdoor water color at the Casa Batllo and la Pedrera.

Day 7 – Field Trip to village at Colonia Güell with the Gaudi experts at the Gaudi Research Institute. Experience the unfinished, little-known master piece of the church and cryptic vaults at Colonia Güell. Group lunch with a unique ‘Gaudian menu’.  Instruction on drawing and coloring while engaging the countryside landscape.

Day 8 – Field trip to Parc Güell with advanced perspective drawing, water colors, light shadow techniques.

Day 9 - Field trip and exploration of Costa Brava seaside village and surrounding nature.

Day 10 - Departure – Awards and celebration event.

Drawing and Color Technique Instruction:

Throughout course you will be taught sketching and water color. Gaudi will often be your inspiration. You will learn techniques, creativity and artistic thinking with the following:

Light, Shadow and 3-D Form

  • Light and shade with line density and layering
  • Texture, tone, and sensuality
  • Charcoal, color lapis pigments and brush work.

Hand drawn series of vacation travel invitations card or flayers with calligraphic city writing. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, ink and painted watercolor imitation. With grunge frames.

Color and Geometry

  • Color expression, light reflectance, definition of form and feelings.
  • Natural geometries, carvings, and proportions of Gaudi
  • Water coloring in field,  color overlay and blending

Spatial Experience and Overlay

  • Contouring human form; positive and negative shapes
  • Perspective techniques in sketching
  • Memory as a hand-to-mind design method
