Understanding Alkaline Water & Its Benefits

Alkalinity in the body is starting to get a lot of attention out on the streets these days. People are in search of remedies for their aches and pains, frequent colds and general feeling of being sick and tired. That is where the importance of alkalinity comes into play. When the body is acidic, it is at a greater risk of diseases and infections. Acid is needed by the body, especially in the stomach to digest food, but when the pH balance is off, many of the body's other mechanisms can be off too. But there is a way to make the body's pH levels more alkaline.

Alkaline water contains antioxidant properties and neutralizes free radicals and toxins in the body. Drinking alkaline water helps to balance pH levels, lower blood pressure and aid the digestive process. Diabetics can have lower blood sugar levels if they drink alkaline water regularly.

Measuring Alkalinity In Water

Foods can be classified by whether they produce acid or alkali within the body. Using a pH scale, 0 indicates the most acidic level, 14 the most alkaline, and 7 is neutral.

The balance of acidity and alkalinity in substances is measured as a pH, which stands for potential hydrogen or the activity of hydrogen ions in the substance. The pH scale goes from 0 (most acid) to 14 (most base or alkaline), with a pH of 7 considered neutral. The scale is logarithmic (as is the Richter scale for earthquakes), which means each whole number is 10 times the previous number--so a pH of 5 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 6.
