It’s no secret that our Nation’s first responders are faced with stressors that escape most of us. It's been estimated that 18% to 30% of all firefighters meet the criteria for a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and that 25 to 30 percent of law enforcement officers suffer from health problems related to stress.
These statistics are contributing to an alarming concern over the suicide rate among first responders. Suicide is the leading cause of death among police officers accounting for more than 200 deaths annually The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has estimated that fire service organizations are three times more likely to experience a suicide within their ranks than a line of duty death.
The World Health Organization has estimated that more than 1 million people die from suicide every year. Suicide claims the lives of more than 75 Americans every day, which equates to the loss of one person every 18 minutes.
