Center for Wellness

“Leading the Way for Peer-Delivered Mental Health Services”

MY PLACE

My Place - Center for Wellness is a non-profit, peer-run organization that provides a safe, supportive and normalizing environment for individuals labeled "mentally ill" in the community. Especially those who are isolated in society, rejecting participation in traditional mental health programs, and to whom even sheltered employment settings are not meeting their needs. My Place - Center for Wellness offers an atmosphere of acceptance where individuals feel needed and grow in self-worth, dignity and self-respect.

Mission

My Place- Center for Wellness provides a Supportive Community, and Programs, that Empower Members in their Journey Toward Mental Health Recovery.

KIRK
Vision

My Place - Center for Wellness will be the Leader of Peer-run Mental Health Services within Oakland County, Michigan. We will accomplish this by implementing the following within our Program.

  • Engage Members, and the Surrounding Community, with the information and resources to assist people in their Recovery Journey.
  • Enrich the Quality of Life of our Members by providing Peer Support, Recovery Programming, Recreational Activities and an Environment that Promotes Dignity and Self-Worth.
  • Empower Members, through Positive Interactions, with a Voice and the Ability to Make Decisions; resulting in Successful Outcomes.

What is My Place- Center for Wellness?

The philosophy behind peer-run organizations (“peer-run” meaning that the program is entirely staffed by persons with a mental health diagnosis) is that by working together and sharing experiences Members have had in the community, Members are able to help each other. The fear of the mental health professional is taken away at a peer-run organization, because everyone has been through similar experiences.

My Place - Center for Wellness can help increase our Member’s knowledge of community resources, allows individuals to learn from one another, and provides a place where social and recreational activities can occur. This enables individuals with severe emotional difficulties to conquer social or communication problems and assume productive life-styles in community settings. My Place - Center for Wellness also provides social support for high-risk hospital users with organized and informal recreational and social activities where individuals and center staff can assist each other in solving dally living problems (social/recreational, housing, transportation, and vocational).

My Place - Center for Wellness places emphasis on helping our Members feel autonomous and make decisions. Individuals have something to offer each other and by helping run the Center and supporting each other. They develop a sense of usefulness, increase their sense of well-being, and minimize their risk of hospitalization.
