PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT

We coordinate with Hospitals, Lactation Specialists, Doulas, Milk bank services, and breast pump suppliers.

PREVENTION OF INFERIOR MILK CONSUMPTION

Most formula is made from skimmed cow’s milk – which wasn’t made for humans so requires intensive processing for infant consumption. Preparing infant formula can also be dangerous – unsafe water, unsterilized equipment, dilution of formula, or potential bacteria in the powder can harm baby or risk possible malnutrition.

LOWER RISK OF CANCER AND DISEASES

Reduction of excess health risks include lower rates of breast and ovarian cancer for the mother and lower rates of ear infections, diarrhea/ vomiting, asthma, diabetes, leukemia, childhood obesity, and SIDS.

OPTIMAL NUTRITION FOR INFANTS

Human breast milk is superior for infants and is species-specific. All other substitutes fail to provide optimal levels of nourishment for the growing body and mind. Exclusive breastfeeding is the benchmark to which substitute feeding preparations are compared in regards to health and growth of the developing child.

OPTIMAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Human milk is much more complex than milk from other mammals and offers tremendous health benefits for both mother and child. Most formula is made from skimmed cow’s milk –requires intensive processing for infant consumption. Preparing infant formula can also be dangerous – unsafe water, unsterilized equipment, dilution of formula, or potential bacteria in the powder can harm baby or risk possible malnutrition.

HEALTH CARE TRAINING PROGRAMS

Colostrum Coalition is dedicated to protecting and elevating the welfare of African Americans by providing a forum in which the racial practices in healthcare is heightened through continuing education and training programs.

BREASTFEEDING EDUCATION AND AWARENESS

We create awareness of and create action against racism in healthcare and build trust in the health care system.

FINANCIAL STABILITY

Breastfeeding saves money and is environmentally friendly. Mothers save more than $1,200-$1,500 in spending for infant formula in just the first year and eliminate the carbon footprint and packaging required by infant formula. Every baby consumes an average of 150 containers of formula which can be saved from landfills; breast milk needs to transportation, preparation, or certified logistics to source ingredients.

PUBLIC HEALTH AWARENESS

Breastfeeding is a KEY strategy to improve public health. The Surgeon General, World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend all infants exclusively be breastfed for the first six months of life. This means no foods or liquids other than breast milk, not even water. Only around a quarter of all infants receive this highest quality level of nutrition.
